Knitting: My first two socks at once

One of my goals this vacation was to learn how to knit socks. For this I bought the book “2-at-a-time socks” by Melissa Morgan-Oakes. I started with the sample socks, in two colors just to learn the technique. I made one small error in the cuffs and shortened the legs, but all in all it’s going well. I hope to finish them this weekend and start working on some useable socks.

Finished: The year of the flood by Margaret Atwood

This is the companion of one of her previous books, Oryx and Crake. In that book a dystopian future is painted where mankind is almost wiped out. Before society is ruled by corporations who splice genes and alter DNA left and right while outside their compounds the world is destroyed. Anyway, this book is taking place at the same time as Oryx and Crake but from the perspective of some ‘regular’ people outside the corporations. A very good story, a ‘nice’ read that tied in well to O&C. It makes me want to read more Atwood. Four stars out of five.

Trip: Liege and Maastricht

Today we went to the Aquarium and Museum in Liege/Luik in Belgium. We drove there from my mom’s house and spent some time in the stuffed and run down museum. H. liked the many animals (many worse off than even his collection) but we felt bad for the fish.
We did visit the town for a bit but the shops were not quite to our tastes. So we left and drove back to Maastricht. Here we went to the famous (for Dutch people at least) St. Pietersberg caves. We were just on time for an almost private (only one other man) tour of the smaller Northern caves. These are old limestone mines that were used after that for defense, hiding art during WWII, growing mushrooms etc. It was a lovely tour and very nice to finally have visited the caves. Someday we will also visit the other larger caves.

A nice week in London

The week before Christmas (15 to 21 december) Henk and I went to London for a small vacation. We had been to London together before, but that was a school trip so we didn’t get to do what we really wanted to.

We spent the week visiting museums (The British Museum, Natural History Museum, V&A, Museum of London), special exhibits (Babylon in the British Museum and Byzantium in the Royal Academy of Arts), historical sites (the Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London) and of course we did a lot of shopping.

The pound was low (almost 1:1 with the euro) and there were Christmas sales going on. We bought lots of books (I love medieval history, and so do the English), DVD boxes, CDs, clothing, etc.

All in all a wonderful week :D

Kathedraal van Sint-Goedele en Sint-Michiel

In de zomer van 2005 zijn we een dagje naar Brussel geweest (om de Expo Belgium te bezoeken) en toen zijn we ook naar deze kathedraal geweest. Veel beelden, en een crypte die ook te bezoeken was. In de kerk was moderne kunst tentoongesteld (wat van ons niet zo had gehoeven) en werd er door een violist muziek gespeeld. Zeer het bezoeken waard!

Dit vind ik echt de mooiste/leukste foto die ik ken van een dog. Het laat gewoon precies zien dat een dog heel lief en zachtaardig is, ook voor een kleine chihuahua. En reken maar dat die chihuahua de baas is hoor! Deze foto is ook door multicopy gebruikt voor een reclame poster.
