First stop: Etsy, the online marketplace of handmade goods by extremely talented crafters. There are several sellers here that sell some great cases, some with customization options.

• Angeliz makes these cute DS cases which have room for your DS (Phat, Lite or i) and 6 games. The case is made of two different fabrics and closes with Velcro. The price is $22,00.




• SiamSquare makes a more purse like case, with a handle. This case also has room for a DS (Lite or i) and 6 games, though in this case the games are stored inside the case. Three different fabric designs are used, and the case closes with Velcro. Price is $28,00 and customization options (fabric choices) are available.




• Janis13 makes a very different case, this felt Gameboy pouch. It is the color and size of an old school b/w Gameboy, and fits a DS (Lite, i) very nicely. Other colors are also available. This pouch, which closes with a zipper, can also be made for the DS Phat for an extra $2. The price for this great and original case is $14,00.




• SmileRecipe makes these cute Gadget Travel Cases that fit a DS (Lite, i) and 4 games perfectly. The fabric is from Japan, and she has some lovely unique cases up for sale. The cases close with Velcro, and cost $15,00.




• Little Mary Moo makes this cute case from denim. It fits a DS (Lite, maybe i) quite snugly. It closes with velcro, and costs $13,00.

Dawanda is like Etsy, but aimed at the European market. There are a lot less sellers, but one really stands out, and that is:

• Liflette makes these gorgeous DS covers for the DS lite and i, with room for six games in the case and a gorgeous leather wrap-around closing. If it weren’t white I would’ve gotten it! They sell for €19,50.

Of course, not only crafters make beautiful cases, so do professional companies. Especially Japan has many beautiful and unique cases, which are unfortunately hard to get here. A selection:

• Fabrix is a professional company that makes all it’s products by hand. They sell (amongst iPhone, iPod, camera and laptop sleeves) a pouch for the DS lite and DSi in various fabric choices. The case has room for two games and a Velcro closing. It sells for $28,90.




• Vis-a-vis, a Japanese company, makes this beautiful case made from kimono fabric. It slips onto your DS Lite, and can be left on while playing. They released it in 2007, and though it seems they are still selling it, I have not been able to find anyplace that sells it and ships it internationally (on a site I can understand). If anyone does, please let me know!




• Kakai makes this simple canvas cover that attaches to your DS lite, and stays on during play. It doesn’t offer much protection, but it does help to individualize your DS. $8,99 at Renchi.




• Keys Factory makes this faux-leather cover for the DS. Like the previous two covers, it attached to your DS lite to stay on during play. The only thing I find dubious about this case is that you are supposed to stick it to your DS with adhesive pads. As I like to switch cases now and then, this seems like bad solution, especially compared to the Vis-a-Vis case. $19,40 at Renchi.

Well, that’s about the best case I could find after browsing the web. If you know of any more, do not hesitate to let me know!

Nintendo DS:

• Mystery Case Files: Millionheir – A search and find game as offered by the MacGameStore in various forms. It has been out in the US for a while now, and I am looking forward to an European release in the coming months. [dec 66].
• Pipemania – A very old school game where you have to connect the pipes (or tracks, or cables, or whatever). Still sounds like a fun puzzle game. Out now. [dec 68].
• GTA: Chinatown Wars – Even though I am not one for violent games (no FPS or fighters for me), the sandbox aspect of the game appeals to me. At least, when I watch H. or my brother play the GTA games they look like fun. I might just try this one. Out in April 2009. [christmas 22-25/feb 32].
• Colour Cross – A small and cheap nonogram/picross game, but since I love those puzzles, this game is a must have for me. Out now (though unavailable) [christmas 72].
• Time Hollow – Sounds like a good point ‘n’ click adventure game, where a pen can open a window to a time in the past, so you can solve problems before they happen. Out in november (?) [christmas 74].
• Zubo – The reviews for this game are not so good, with the biggest complaint that it is a children’s game (too simple). Still sounds like fun to me, so when it is a bit cheaper I will probably get it. Out now. [christmas 75].
• Unsolved Crimes - Another point ‘n’ click game, in the style of Hotel Dusk. I can never get enough of point ‘n’ click, so this is on my wishlist. Out now. [christmas 76].
• Boing! Docomodake DS – A puzzle game featuring a mushroom. Sounds like fun! ;) Out now. [christmas 81].
• Blue Dragon Plus – The Xbox game looked and sounded great, so I am keeping my eye on this one. I do hope it will be more RPG than RTS, I am not a big fan of RTS… [jan 28-29/feb 33].
• Chrono Trigger – A remake of a great classic RPG. Sounds very good to me, and I would love to get into this one. [jan 30-31].
• Riz-zoawd – RPG game based on the Wizard of Oz. Very original. [jan 30-31].
• Ninjatown – The ninja’s by Shawnimals are very funny and cute, and this game, a “tower defence” game, sounds like the right mix of fun and games. Out now. [jan 72].
• Pokémon Platinum – The revamped version of Diamond/Pearl, but since it’s been such a long time since I played that game, I want this one. Release date is set at summer of 2009. [feb 26].
• Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time – A new Final Fantasy is always welcome, and this one promisses interaction between the DS and Wii versions of the game. Release date is spring 2009. [feb 27.]
• Eledees: The Adventures of Kai and Zero – I loved Eledees/Elebits on the Wii, and with all this talk going around that the puzzles in this game are similar to Zelda… I want it! Release in spring 2009. [feb 30].
• Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure – Sounds like Professor Layton. I know it isn’t, but it still seems a cool game. Release in spring 2009. [feb 30]
• Neopets Puzzle Adventure – A puzzlequest like combination of Othelo/Go and Neopets… Simple but fun I think. Release date set at februari 2009. [feb 35].
• Professor Layton: Pandora’s Box – Maybe, someday, we’ll have an English version of this game, which has been released already in Japan. TBC. [feb 36].
• Professor Layton: Last Time Travel – See above. TBC. [feb 36].
• Dragon Quest IX – Good, old school like RPG. Winter 2009. [feb 39].
• Mario & Luigi 3 – The threequel to Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. I love the GBA and DS games, so I can’t wait for this RPG! TBC. [feb 40].

Nintendo Wii:

• MySims Kingdom – I already have the DS version, but I want the Wii version too. The game is featured in two issues (preview and review) and sounds like fun. Out now. [dec 22-23/christmas 50-51].
• Kororinpa 2 – I enjoyed the first Kororinpa game, and the integration of the balance board sounds like fun. Release date is set for the summer of 2009. [dec 33/feb 36].
• Safecracker - Featured on a two page spread about point ‘n’ click adventures, this game features mostly puzzles to crack safes. Sounds like a fun and cheap game. Release date was set for November 2008, though I haven’t found it in stores yet. [dec 38].
• A new beginning – Another point ‘n’ click adventure, also with a release date of November 2008, and even more unfindable (it doesn’t help that it shares its title with the latest Spyro game…). [dec 39].
• Escape the museum – Like Millionheir, a ‘find the object’ game, but this time for the Wii. Out at Christmas 2008 (but I haven’t found it yet…). [dec 39].
• De Blob – I have read much about this game, and I really wish I could try a demo or something… it sounds like fun, but I am still not sure if it’s for me. Maybe one to find a in a bargain bin someday. Out now. [dec 58-59].
• Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party – This is just a silly fun game to play with friends. When the price comes down a bit this will be a fun game to have. I especially like the balance board integration. Released back in November. [christmas 44-47].
• Shaun White Snowboarding – The only reason I am even looking at this game (I am no fan of sports games) is that I used to love 1080 on the N64, and that memory, combined with the balance board integration makes this game sounds like fun. Out now (?). [christmas 52-55].
• Animal Crossing – Even though this game is almost exactly like the DS version (which I played so much I can dream it), and even though I know I’ll never play the Wii daily… I still wanted. The power of Nintendo! Out now. [jan 48-51].
• Tomb Raider: Underworld – I played the anniversary Tomb Raider on Wii before, and they say this is even more puzzle and less fighting. That’s good, because the fighting killed me everytime. Out now. [jan 54-55].
• Endless Ocean 2 – Mentioned in a list of rumors about this years releases. This is one game I am looking forward to, especially if, like the writers in NGamer want, the game contains more of a story, and more diving sites like ships. I loved the original game, and wish I could discover everything all over again. TBC. [feb 22].
• Klonoa, Door to Phantomville – A nice looking platformer. TBC. [feb 23].
• Another Code: R - A Wii sequel to the Another Code game for the DS. I loved that game, so I am looking forward to this one. TBC [feb 23].
• Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time – A new Final Fantasy is always welcome, and this one promisses interaction between the DS and Wii versions of the game. Release date is spring 2009. [feb 27.]
• Sam & Max Season Two – This reminds me, I need to buy and play season one… TBC. [feb 29].

• Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the new world – A full length RPG on the Wii… I’m looking forward to it! TBC [feb 62-63].

MySims Kingdom (Wii en DS)

Woohoo, een nieuwe MySims! Ik heb zowel de DS als de Wii versie van de huidige MySims, en ik vind beide leuk. Ze verschillen van elkaar (de DS versie is meer minigames, de Wii versie meer bouwen), dus ik kijk zeker uit naar deze release. Hier zou ook nog meer verhaal in zitten… woohoo.

Unsolved Crimes (DS)

Een nieuwe point ‘n’ click adventure… woohoo! Daar kijk ik altijd naar uit!

• Guitar Hero on Tour dus, met een extra attachment die in de GBA slot gaat waarmee je gitaar kan spelen. Niks voor mij, maar ziet er grappig uit.
• Preview van Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution. Ziet er heel goed uit, met precies genoeg gestript van de PC versie om te werken op de DS en toch nog leuk te zijn.
• Preview van Soul Bubbles. Een vreemd spel over luchtbellen die door een soort van doolhoven moeten worden geleid door middel van de stylus. Men zegt even innovatief als Loco Roco op de PSP. Ziet er heel leuk uit en krijgt goede previews en hands-on reviews.
• Eco creatures: Save the forest. Grappige ecologische RPG met een durian als leider. Leuke import die een 76 krijgt.
• Hele goede review van The World End With You. Ik heb dit spel al in huis, maar zal het pas spelen als mijn scriptie af is…. Ik wil het wel heel graag want het klinkt als een enorm coole vernieuwende RPG die zich in hedendaags Tokio afspeeld en in een shaduw wereld. Allemaal coole ideeën, de review geeft dan ook een 90.
• Japanse import review van Sim City 2. Beter dan deel 1 omdat het nu minder een oneindig spel is maar meer een met vooruitgang in behapbare blokken. Klinkt cool, dus hopen op vertaling. Score 81.
• US import review van Lost in Blue 3. Hoewel de eerste twee me dodelijk saai leken, klinkt deze wel ok. Misschien in de uitverkoop. Hij krijgt een 77.

Voor de Wii:

• Preview van Alone in the Dark, volgens mij een first person shooter, leuk voor de vriend :)
• Review van Wii Fit. Als ik al dacht vind ook de NGamer Wii Fit meer een gimmick. Het is heel leuk, maar niet iets wat ik iedere dag zou doen, en 90 euro is wel veel geld. Krijgt dan ook een 68.
• Review van Family Ski, leuk voor met de balance board, maar gelukkig ook speelbaar met de gewone controls. Vooral het free-roaming aspect is gaaf. Leuk in de aanbiedingen bak. Score: 81.
• Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King is een van de eerste WiiWare spellen, te koop voor 1500 punten = 15 euro. Een soort van simulation builder in de wereld van Final Fantasy. Klinkt heel gaaf, maar de content die je tegen betaling kan downloaden verontrust me. Ik zou wel willen weten wat het totaal aan kosten is. NGamer is niet zo positief, maar zij reviewen dan ook de Japanse versie. Online zijn de reviews wel goed.
• Lonpos, ook voor WiiWare, wordt ook reviewed. Klinkt als een leuk puzzel spel, alleen iets te duur voor 1000 punten, met daarbij ook nog te downloaden content tegen betaling.

The aMAZEing labyrinth (DS)

The aMAZEing labyrinth is de DS versie van het bordspel De Betoverde doolhof waarbij je met behulp van het schuiven van kaartjes door het doolhof kan lopen om schatten te verzamelen. Omdat je met het schuiven van een kaartje het doolhof verandert kan je elkaar goed dwars zitten, of prongelijk helpen. Ik heb het veel gespeeld en het is heel leuk. Ik hoop dat de DS versie dit ook is, ik zal hem in de gaten houden.

Animal Crossing (Wii)

Animal Crossing op de DS is mijn eerste verslaving geweest op de DS. De trucjes die het een bijzonder spel maken, zoals de echte tijd gebruiken (is het buiten nacht, dan ook in het spel), worden bij de versie voor de Wii uitgebreid. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld door middel van WiiConnect 24 waarmee het weerbericht kan worden opgehaald. Ook het online aspect van het spel wordt waarschijnlijk uitgebreid. Waarschijnlijk wordt deze aangekondigt op de E3, in juli dit jaar, voor de release eind 2008. Ik hoop het!

Broken Sword (DS)

Absoluut een gerucht, er zijn geen screens of wat dan ook, maar er bestaat een kans dat er een Broken Sword game komt. Misschien een remake, misschien een nieuwe, maar hoe dan ook iets om naar uit te kijken.

Zover ik weet zijn dit de drie games die deze week langskwamen waar ik naar uit kijk op dit moment.

Het verhaal van het spel
Je valt in een grot en terwijl je er uit probeert te komen wordt je aangevallen door verschillende monsters die normaal nooit in je wereld voorkwamen. Als je er na een aantal gevechten uit bent kom je erachter dat er een probleem is met de balans tussen het licht en het duister. Het duister probeert de overhand te krijgen en dus zijn er vier strijders uitverkoren om het gevecht aan te gaan. En jij bent een van die vier!
Zo begint Final Fantasy III. Veel meer van het verhaal zal ik niet verklappen, maar het is een goed en diepgaand verhaal, vergezeld van vele gevechten en quests. Je reist je wereld rond om uit te vinden wat er nu eigenlijk aan de hand is, om het op te lossen en eigenlijk ook een beetje om erachter te komen waar jij (als wees) vandaan komt.

Het spel
Final Fantasy III is een klassieke RPG. Je kunt dan ook veel gevechten met monsters verwarchten die je weer experience points en geld opleveren. Je clubje bestaat (uiteindelijk) uit vier personen en ieder van deze personen heeft een baan. Hoe verder je in het spel komt hoe meer mogelijkheden er zijn en natuurlijk heeft iedere baan zijn sterke en zwakke punten, en zijn mogelijkheden. Op het internet staat reviews waarbij het spel nog al moeilijk bevonden wordt, maar ik zelf vond dit erg meevallen. Zoals bij alle RPG’s helpt het af en toe om te grinden (veel vechten om sterker te worden) en zo is het spel goed te spelen. Het is soms niet helemaal duidelijk wat de volgende quest is, maar uitproberen en misschien een guide helpen daar zeker bij. Je hebt ook nog items (om weer gezond te worden of beter te worden), wapens en kleding (om beter te vechten en beschermen) en magic (om aan te vallen en te beschermen) waarmee je ieder gevecht kan proberen te winnen. Om de zoveel tijd komt er een (veel sterkere) eindbaas aan, maar veel vuldig saven helpt altijd.

Goede en slechte punten
Goede punten:
- Mooie en simpele graphics, wel 3D. Zeker het openingsfilmpje is adembenemend
- Diepgaand verhaal wat niet gauw verveeld
- Veel mogelijkheden (met je party, items, wapentuig en magic)

Slechte punten:
- Soms een beetje moeilijk (in het begin is grinden echt noodzakelijk)
- Niet altijd even duidelijk waar de volgende quest is te vinden

Conclusie
Final Fantasy III is een geweldige diepgaande role playing game en een must have voor de liefhebbers van het genre. Ook voor mensen die nog nooit Final Fantasy hebben gespeeld is het een zeer toegankelijke game.

Je kunt hier naar een specialistische gameshop gaan (zoals de Gameshop in Den Haag of Next-Level in Arnhem) waar ze veel import DS spellen verkopen. Probleem is, ze zijn duur. Een import spel kost vaak tussen de 45 en 50 euro. Dat kan goedkoper.

Online is de tweede optie. Het enige wat je nodig hebt is geduld en een creditcard. Op het forum van Budgetgaming staat een goed topic over importeren, maar ik zal hieronder een paar tips geven.

US Games:

• CD Wow was mijn eerste bron voor US Games. Kleine beperkte selectie, maar goede prijzen, iDeal betaling (overmaken) en geen verzendkosten of belasting. Echter, de laatste paar maanden zijn er alleen maar berichten dat spellen verzonden worden en niet aankomen. Ik ken niemand die de laatste maanden een spel hebben ontvangen van CD Wow (CD’s en DVD’s wel). Je krijgt je geld terug, maar toch, het is de moeite niet meer waard.
• Play Asia en Yes Asia (maar zie daarvoor hieronder).

Japanse Games:

• Play Asia heeft een grote selectie (hoewel zoveel staat op niet leverbaar) van zowel US als Japanse (als Koreaanse en Europese) games. De prijzen zijn in dollars, wat met de huidige koersen niet vervelend is. Verder hebben ze veel Japans speelgoed, zoals Gashapon en Mobile Straps. Goedkoop en heel leuk. Betalen met credit card en bij bestellingen boven de 45 euro betaal je douane en inklaringskosten. Ze vermelden dood leuk de echte waarde op je pakket, dus houdt er rekening meer. Je betaald ook verzendkosten (iets meer als 5 euro) en deze tellen mee met je 45. Als de bestelling niet compleet is versturen ze soms deels zonder extra kosten. Verzending is snel en vanuit Hong Kong.
• Yes Asia heeft een iets minder grote selectie en niet zoveel speelgoed, maar dat maken ze goed door geen verzendkosten te rekenen en hun geweldige verzendmanier. Zij versturen namelijk vanuit Hong Kong via Duitsland, waardoor je geen douanekosten hoeft te betalen. Let op, dit geldt niet altijd (want het is geen policy) en ook niet voor hardware. Verder vermelden zij niet de waarde op je pakket. Verzending is daardoor iets langzamer (maar het scheelt maar 1 of 2 dagen). De communicatie is heel goed (ik kreeg bericht van een vertraging) en de site is duidelijk.

eBay is ook een optie, maar er zijn ongelofelijk veel nep DS spellen in omloop. Bij een winkel (online of echt) betaal je meer maar loop je hier minder risico op. Zoek trouwens wel wereldwijd, dat scheelt vaak in de selectie en de kosten.

Voor de DS:

• Phoenix Wright: Trials and tribulations (82) en Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (80). Ik heb de eerste Phoenix Wright. Deze is wel leuk, maar om er zoveel spellen van te hebben… Misschien als ze wat goedkoper zijn.
• Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Weer een Final Fantasy (spin off) game. Ik heb hem al in huis maar nog niet kunnen spelen, maar hij lijkt me wel heel gaaf (alles van Final Fantasy is gaaf). Hij krijgt een 84.
• Review van Professor Layton and the curious village, US import, krijgt een 86. Ik heb het spel geimporteerd en vind het (zoals eerder gezegd) een ongelofelijk leuk spel. Kijk, hier zou ik er zo 10 van kopen (als er 10 verschillende waren).
• Een speciaal item over Japanse puzzel spellen die men gelokaliseerd wil zien. Maar vergeet dat lokaliseren, het fijne van het onleesbare Japans is dat de cijfers gewoon Arabisch zijn. Ze vertellen kort over Puzzle Series vol. 5 (Slitherlink), 4 (Kakuro), 10 (Hitori), 11 (Nurikabe), 12 (Akari) en Illust logic DS & colourful logic. Alle spellen zijn te spelen zonder kennis van Japans en Kakuro en Illust logic uitgezonderd hier niet te krijgen. Kakuro doet me niet zoveel (en heb ik al als onderdeel van Platinum Sudoku), maar de overige spellen wel. Een korte online zoektocht toont aan dat deze spellen niet duur hoeven te zijn (tussen de 15 en 20 euro), zeker met de lage dollar op dit moment. Ik heb ze dus allemaal besteld (behalve Kakuro). Illust Logic is Picross, maar wat me greep is dat het verhaaltje deze “Picross done perfect” noemde. Dat kan niet misgaan zou je zeggen. Ik heb vrijwel alles binnen (behalve Nurikabe), dus reviews volgen!

Voor de Wii:

• Mario Kart Wii die een 88 krijgt en vele pagina’s verhaal en uitleg. Ik heb het spel al een paar weken en hij is echt heel leuk, ook voor iedereen die nog nooit Mario Kart heeft gespeeld of niet van race spellen houden.
